Bowen by Pauline, Bowen Technique, Kirkcaldy, Fife
What is the Bowen Technique?
The Bowen Technique is a form of gentle bodywork that was first developed by the late Tom Bowen, Geelong, Australia.  He developed this technique in the 1950's and became very interested in ways to alleviate human suffering and began to notice that certain moves on the body had particular effects.

Bowen is a truly holistic and versatile therapy and there are many procedures used to address different issues, depending on the need of the individual.

It works by utilising small but measured inputs to the body stimulating the body to heal itself, achieving balance and re-alignment, resulting in lasting relief from pain and discomfort.  Gentle rolling moves are made over skin, fascia, muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves, and such moves send signals via the automomic nervous system which helps the body retrieve its memory of a relaxed and balanced state.

What to expect in a Bowen Treatment

It is recommended to have a course of at least three treatments initially, to determine the effectiveness of the treatment, however this is not always necessary.  Some clients like to receive 'top-up' sessions, to help improve their general well-being.

A thorough assessment is taken prior to the first treatment to ascertain the best way forward.

Treatment is suitable for all ages from newborn to the elderly, and indeed pregnant women have benefited from Bowen.

Therapy sessions, are normally performed with the client lying on a therapy bed, but can be done sitting or standing, if required for comfort.  A typical session lasts about 40-60 minutes, however can be much less depending on the reactions of the client.  Bowen moves are gentle but purposeful and performed either on the skin or through light clothing.  Regular wait times are incorporated between sets of moves to allow the body to respond to the treatment.
